Tobacco companies did not do enough to warn the public about smoking’s health consequences!

The black box warning first appeared on tobacco product packaging in the mid-1960s and only stated that “Cigarette Smoking May Be Hazardous to your Health.” The warning increased in severity over time, but only because of court requirements. Sadly this warning came too late for many tobacco-related cancer victims who started smoking between 1960-1979.

At the time, people were not aware of the health hazards of tobacco, nor of the addictive nature of nicotine and millions smoked every day for decades. Many of these smokers developed cancer and must deal with consequences daily.

Smoking-related illness in the United States costs more than $300 billion each year, including nearly $170 billion for direct medical care for adults. More than $156 billion in lost productivity, including $5.6 billion in lost productivity due to secondhand smoke exposure. (Source: cdc.gov)
